A wanderer starts an Apple Garden Homestay in his home village in Jumla

Visitors to Jumla’s Apple Garden Homestay can experience organic cuisine, explore the tourist attractions in the area, and engage in gardening activities in the beautiful orchard.

Jumla’s Kanakasundari, a historically and mythologically significant place, derives its name from the famous Kanakasundari Temple. Located approximately 55 kilometers west of the district headquarters, Jumla is surrounded by rivers such as Hima, Mahendramalli, Chalaseri, Dhovighat, Letegad, Jiugad, and Nyaurigad. In the beautiful Apple Garden near Kanakasundari-4, a local entrepreneur, Nirmal Budha (40 years old), initiated the Apple Garden Homestay from last May.

Spanning 5500 square kilometers, this homestay comprises a kitchen and three well-equipped rooms, forming an attractive residence with two small cottages (for dining and resting). The garden boasts more than 150 apple trees, adding a special charm during the apple season. Visitors can also explore the cultivation of potatoes, pumpkins, and other vegetables in the garden. The small river and the serene atmosphere created by the surrounding hills make the place delightful. In the chilly weather, a fireplace adds warmth in the evening, making it a cozy place to enjoy.
Starting a homestay wasn’t Nirmal’s first choice; he had initially envisioned engaging in businesses like goat and sheep farming. However, while exploring local ventures, Nirmal developed a keen interest in the hospitality sector. Witnessing the failure of homestays in neighboring areas, he dreamt of showcasing his homestay. Unfortunately, financial constraints delayed his plans.

With the support of the Srijana project, last year Nirmal visited the ‘Valley Homestay’ in Gabhar, Kohalpur, Nepalgunj, as part of a familiarization trip. This experience, coupled with training and assistance, inspired him to start his homestay back in his village. Partnering with the Srijana Project, which connected with young locals aspiring to start their ventures. This collaboration not only brought attention to his venture but also played a significant role in promoting entrepreneurship in the region.

Nirmal received support for building homestay infrastructure and acquiring necessary amenities for the kitchen, beds, tables, and chairs through the project. This additional assistance provided the energy to achieve his homestay dream. The initial phases of the business have shown promising results.

Situated near the famous Bumramadi Chaur, Malikabota, Kanakasundari Virat, and Pandavgufa, the homestay benefits from its geographical location, historical significance, and the surrounding natural and cultural excellence. The region’s rich history and the confluence of ‘Khas’ culture and Hindu civilization add to the charm of Apple Garden Homestay.

In addition to accommodation, the homestay offers the taste of organic cuisine prepared by Nirmal himself. The includes dishes like Marsi rice, barley/buckwheat/millet bread, local chicken/mutton, hemp pickle, radish salad, and other seasonal vegetables. Nirmal’s culinary skills further enhance the homestay experience. Guests can also enjoy the sweetness of homemade desserts.

Nirmal’s homestay is not just about his own success. He envisions incorporating more locals into the venture. Though he started from his own home, he plans to expand and involve others gradually. The homestay also supports Nirmal’s family, and they actively contribute to the business. Nirmal’s confidence in his venture is reflected in his words: “I have faith that by extending the stay of tourists in homestays, I can involve them in gardening and other local activities, including exploring the Himalayas, enjoying scenic views, and immersing in art and culture in my own garden.”

This part of Jumla connects to the famous Rara Lake trail. The high-altitude, crisp air and the stunning Himalayan ranges to the north add to the beauty of the area. The historical significance of the Sinja Valley region is highlighted by the unique blend of Khas civilization and Hindu culture.
Nirmal’s passion for farming and his homestay have become a source of inspiration for the local youth. Beyond providing training, he actively involves them in various aspects of homestay operations, aiming to contribute to local businesses and further develop the local economy.
In a time when many Nepali youth see limited job opportunities within the country, Nirmal stands out as a shining example of someone who has created opportunities within his own community. His journey, from starting with self-confidence to building a thriving homestay with his family, showcases the potential for self-employment and entrepreneurship in Nepal.
